This allowed Emma to go straight to VC investors with their own term sheet, having prepared one on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SeedLegals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Organic growth like this has been the secret of success for other financial innovators like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revolut.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/monzo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monzo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reducing the cost of customer acquisition to near zero.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople tweet about it.\u201d Emma was also App of the Day in the App Store in March, which indicates the quality of product they have built.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company quickly closed a \u00a3500k seed round led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimaventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kima Ventures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the first investors to back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/transferwise.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transferwise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, joined by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/aglaeventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agla\u00e9 Ventures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another French seed fund of the Groupe Arnault, that has invested in both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airbnb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Alongside them, several Angel investors joined the round; founders that have built and sold industry-leading companies, impressed with Emma\u2019s vision, their entrepreneurial skill, and early-stage traction.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeedLegals gives you a sense of control over the transaction. It was really straight forward… But it was strange writing the term sheet for investors, as it is usually the other way around.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The speed of transaction was fast. \u201cWe were already live as a product, and received offers within two weeks. It took 1 month to do the whole thing… from \u2018here\u2019s term sheet\u2019 to \u2018here\u2019s the share certificate\u2019. We were actually slowed down by international money transfers, because some of the investors are French.\u201d Moreni explains how the exchange of funds was simple; terms sheets are signed online and crystalised. Funds are sent, and the Founders tick a box on the SeedLegals platform to confirm receipt. Tamsin\u2019s career background spans senior startup roles, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working with startups on fundraising, and helping Private Equity & VC investors to assess the social and environmental impact of their portfolios.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPre-loved clothes are becoming quite normal, and attitudes are changing fast, which is helping us\u201d, explains Tamsin. \u201cThis part of the market has grown much faster than regular \u2018new\u2019 fashion\u201d, but she believes this kind of circular economy initiative would not have been easy to launch ten years ago. Tamsin\u2019s background in eco-investments has helped the company to reduce its own environmental impact significantly, such as working exclusively with reusable packaging and designing ecological cleaning operations. They handle almost everything in-house<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onloan\u2019s startup story began with the two founders bootstrapping for four months to prove people were interested in the concept, then launching an Angel round, with 20 investors signing Term Sheets created by the founders on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SeedLegals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The process took 5 months to complete. \u201cOur biggest investor is actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiny.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiny VC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who are just fantastic, and very fast – they are run by the two guys who run <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/angel.co\/europe\/investors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AngelList<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Europe. Lots of documents need to be reproduced but with just a few different terms in them. It\u2019s so painful at this stage to be spending money on something like that. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not a good use of your money.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think anyone finds raising money easy. You are always worried about stuff that might rock the boat,\u201d which includes the negotiation process, and occasional tussle over legal fees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeedLegals were really great. The number one thing for me was responsiveness at all hours. I was messaging them through intercom at 10pm, and I\u2019d get a response – which was super helpful. Sometimes it was needed to get back to an Angel quickly, sometimes I was suddenly worried I\u2019d done something wrong. It was really nice to have the reassurance, with someone explaining a term to me, or to check that what I\u2019d negotiated was a reasonable thing to negotiate. You could lose a night\u2019s sleep over that otherwise. Genuinely, there were a couple of times where it helped me to get to sleep. It was magic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing this on a fixed fee basis, \u201cI was super impressed\u201d. Apart from this, \u201cthe platform is super easy. I like having all my documents in one place\u2026 knowing that the right people have access to the right documents, and keeping the process really organised, without me having to do very much\u201d. This gives all stakeholders clarity upfront.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are very helpful in giving you a sense of where negotiations with investors typically end up, for things like Drag Along and Tag Along rights, which are normal. Detailed explanations on the platform help Founders advocate effectively in negotiations and show users the data to back it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cIt gives us founders the data to support our point of view, and makes the process quicker. Like where it explains that 80% of seed round startups don\u2019t have an Investor Director\u201d. When you are ready to take on an Investor Director, however, there\u2019s a contract lined up, helping to speed that process along too, without needing to hire a lawyer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern technology is allowing new subscription models like this to flourish – adding more value to customers, for lower cost. Both Onloan and SeedLegals are challenging incumbents with these innovative tech-powered business models, reducing waste, speeding things up, while offering extraordinary service; from real-time intercom responses, to free repairs and returns. ThriveMap\u2019s process is a powerful combination of work simulation technology, cultural match-making, process standardisation, and employer branding. It uses cutting edge assessment technology to work out the capability, commitment and cultural fit of potential hires upfront, while giving both sides a try-before-you-buy work simulation experience. Millions of candidates can now be automatically assessed for role suitability, and interviews conducted more intelligently. The conventional CV + ad hoc interview process may well be coming to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThriveMap co-founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christopherplatts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Platts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes that the future of hiring is centered on work simulation, as the fairest way to assess someone is to see them in the role. \u201cEventually, this will become a full VR experience\u201d, he believes. A virtual shift is a high fidelity candidate fitness test, with standardised benchmarks, and tasks done in controlled conditions. Each simulation is designed collaboratively with the employer to be as close to real-world context as possible. The process is scientific; ensuring brand consistency while making best-practice more scalable. This is particularly useful for high volume hirers such as retail, hospitality, and\u00a0 customer service roles, clear examples where service standards matter a great deal, but best-practice can be hard to scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThriveMap\u2019s \u201cvirtual assessments\u201d happen prior to interview, as an automated pre-screening exercise, producing a detailed report on each candidate. This is used by hiring managers, measuring alignment (a \u2018map\u2019 on cultural fit, commitment and capabilities) against an ideal, so all interviews can be conducted in a structured and consistent manner. Is this the right role for you?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.safelite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safelite Autoglass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now a major client, working with ThriveMap from an early stage; they typically screen 170,000 new candidates a year, demonstrating how technologies like this can help big employers find efficiencies at scale. Client companies decide what is a good fit for them, and what to assess in their customised ThriveMap assessment. Stronger candidates can be identified for interview much faster and cheaper through a virtual assessment; a now automated process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you look at the data on the predictive validity of different assessment techniques, typical (unstructured) job interviews are really low predictors of success in a role. Personality tests are really poor predictors of success, as reliability is low, and people typically behave differently in different contexts\u201d, explains Platts. Results demonstrate that it is much better to simulate what this person would actually be doing in a role and to measure against this. \u201cThriveMap starts from a position of ecological validity… which is what does good look like in your specific context? \u2018Let\u2019s say you are looking for resilience in a new hire?\u2019, for example\u201d. Resilience can mean different things in different contexts. With ThriveMap it can be tested in precisely the right way in a specific work situation, designed with that employer. The data from this process can then be validated against results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrivemap joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lmarks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L Marks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> innovation incubator, hoping to explore product development opportunities with global employer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.belron.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of Autoglass fame. During a client visit as part of the program, they spotted an opportunity to automate a key part of the hiring process for Carglass Spain, then <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ran a successful trial to fix this problem. The end result was a commercial contract, and an equity investment from the client and LMarks combined. It\u2019s a remarkable story of early corporate venture investment, that has allowed ThriveMap to de-risk the business early, to build a much more sophisticated product, and to attract new investors simultaneously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company’s investor base is now a mixture of Angels and corporate stakeholders. It has completed two seed rounds; first using conventional lawyers, then latterly, online via <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SeedLegals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The term sheets for this were created online by the founders, following a step-by-step process, making sure the original shareholder terms were fully respected. Automation and standardisation accelerate the process, while legal terms included are easily understood. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe SeedLegals team really supports the founders. Everything in plain English\u201d, recalls Platts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing a technology company, we really value a good interface. The simplest things like signing a document can be done on the platform, and all of your key documents are in one place. For me, the less paper, the better. Dealing with traditional lawyers can involve a lot of back and forth, while SeedLegals is largely automated,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documents are synchronized. Personalised copies are emailed to stakeholders to review, and sign off when ready to complete. New shares can be modeled on the cap table at different valuations, before being issued, so the impact on dilution is simulated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor investor communications, it was really really helpful\u201d, notes Platts. As new users, \u201cwe did lean on SeedLegals for quite a lot of customer support, and the response was really positive. They want it to be efficient, unlike traditional lawyers who are charging by the hour.\u201d Lessons learned from client interactions are fed back into software development; the platform evolving every few weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow anything new that needs signing off, such as Shareholder approvals, can easily be done through the platform. Investors log in to SeedLegals themselves to access the documents and click to approve\u201d – saving time on legal bureaucracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThriveMap has since raised more capital using SeedLegals – choosing the new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/instant-investment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instant Investment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool, over opening a full round. Existing investors were able to follow-on, and the transaction processed without lawyers in a very short timeframe. \u201cReally simply, you don\u2019t have to start again from scratch. A key benefit is being able to do this when you need it rather than waiting\u201d. The speed, simplicity and seamlessness of this process, allow Founders to focus on growing their business. It can be done whenever a new investor (or an existing investor) is ready. It can now be done in a matter of hours, rather than months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both ThriveMap and SeedLegals are finding innovative new ways to help businesses leapfrog over clumsy, expensive and outdated practices. The vision is to offer a fair, easy, low-cost digital letting experience; a slick <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-in-one platform that goes well beyond a listings portal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Woollard is somewhat obsessive about innovation in this market, seeking to create <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new class of intermediary between landlords and tenants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top grievances with the trade include a lack of transparency or accountability and the absurd costs of handling basic administration. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK agents charge a remarkable \u00a35.6 billion in fees each year, while boasting the lowest consumer satisfaction levels for any industry (by far). This is a market ripe for change. People moving house will be all too familiar with the pain and skulduggery of recovering your deposits. \u201cWhile still a student, I was being ripped off for my flat\u2019s entire deposit, which was almost \u00a33,000. So this encouraged us to start researching, and every tenant we spoke with had had a nightmare journey with renting.\u201d Woollard challenged the agent head-on about the deposit, and eventually, the deductions were reduced to \u00a346 per person. \u201cBecause we felt this pain so personally, it has given us the drive to fix it for others too\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team is set on a paradigm shift. \u201cFor generation rent, accommodation is our biggest single cost. Why is there no user-experience, no transparency, no flexibility, no control, and accountability over the rental journey?!\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bunk has built a very impressive all-in-one platform to improve on this, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helping you to find your perfect property, chat directly with the landlord, book viewings, make offers, sign your contract, pay your rent and report any maintenance issues.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst the company was founded from the perspective of frustrated tenants, the discovery that problems were equally, if not more, pervasive for landlords encouraged the founders to pursue radical change in the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bunk sees itself as a challenger brand, looking for ways to disrupt the market \u2013 with fairness and efficiency at the heart of it. Their pricing offer to landlords is potentially very disruptive, introducing a flat fee structure, as low as \u00a310\/month. The average UK fee is \u00a31,600 (4 weeks rent), so this is extraordinarily competitive. For tenants too, rental payments will soon contribute to your credit history (through a partnership with Experian); the concept of having a rental passport is a game-changer if you plan to buy later. It is perhaps no surprise then that they have attracted the backing on Nationwide (lender of choice to many), as a recent institutional investor and strategic partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Bunk\u2019s startup story<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no handbook for this\u201d notes Tom Woollard, who partnered with co-founders Harry Stirling and Jack Widnell from inception while at university. The lack of rules guiding them is seen as an advantage, helping the company to re-imagine the trade from the ground up. \u201cWe were very lucky to connect with a business mentor to sanity-check our business plans at the early stages\u201d. The mentor became their lead investor. Looking back at their startup story, Woollard recalls 3 founder friends moonlighting while at university, having suffered the pains of renting themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found themselves pitching with a simple deck for pre-seed funding while doing their finals, attracting offers from an angel syndicate. Woollard describes this as something of an informal \u2018friends and family\u2019 style round of funding, originally using borrowed legal documents, to get \u00a3150k in to start the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They then discovered<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SeedLegals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which helps Founders through the journey of raising capital, using it to formalise a second <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/pricing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seed funding round<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with new Articles, while including corporate venture investors Nationwide on the cap table. \u201cWe are looking forward to getting into Series A funding next year and going back to SeedLegals for this\u201d, noting that SeedLegals has recently raised VC capital from Index Ventures, administering it all through the platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe did not go through the traditional route,\u201d Woollard explains, having attracted a corporate investor early on. SeedLegals helped Bunk by automating the investment journey, while they worked through it with a corporate lawyer side-by-side. \u201cIt was a really interesting experience, going through the process on the platform with a traditional lawyer,\u201d noting the irony of how much work SeedLegals is taking away from the legal profession.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is an incredibly founder-friendly platform that I now see as an essential resource for first-time founders. It is absolutely fantastic.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documents available to Founders at the early stages are seen as an invaluable resource too, including Founder Agreements to map out fair if-this-then-that scenarios, including vesting schedules. Bunk has done all of their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/features\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IP agreements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, employment contracts, NED and contactors agreements online through SeedLegals for a low-cost subscription; \u201call the things you need as a startup, that you don\u2019t normally have access to, without paying a lawyer\u201d. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\/emi-scheme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMI options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in the pipeline too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s irony in the nature of this intra-startup relationship; two enabling SAAS platforms coming together like this, while each seeking to transform their respective markets – directly challenging incumbent business models, and getting technology to do fundamental administration. Bunk has a very exciting opportunity to fix the broken rental market by taking a customer-centric position and enabling seamless transactions, including contractual sign-off. It is refreshing to see such a positive example of entrepreneurship and technology coming together to make life much better, while simultaneously cutting costs for customers. As with any major market change, there are risks and booby traps and charlatans to be wary of; from fake followers, to fake festivals, to celebrity influencer backlashes. But recruiting, and working with authentic influencers can be messy. Soren\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge is deep, and born of craftsmanship; it is wonderful to see someone so committed to their craft, bringing extraordinary products to life from scratch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr & Mrs Kongsgaard are the Danish husband & wife team driving premium drinks brand, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kongsgaardgin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kongsgaard Gin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a craft spirits business with big plans, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoying the remarkable revival of gin, and the growing demands of discerning customers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now based in London, and exporting internationally, Kongsgaard are winning the admiration of mixologists and connoisseurs around the world, with their unique Scandinavian approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as being an ideal home for ambitious startups, London has the highest density of cocktail bars in the world. Like its founders themselves, however, the product begins in Denmark. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kongsgaard is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a fuller, more characterful gin; a premium Scandinavian product, introducing traditional Danish apples to the recipe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any luxurious product, details matter a great deal. Danish apples are a secret weapon. They develop slowly due to temperate conditions and benefit from a thicker skin. \u201cIt is the perfect apple-growing terroir, with clay soil, long nights, and sheltered from the sea\u201d explains Soren. \u201cThere are fresh acidic notes\u2026 this is the beauty of Danish apples – the play between the aromatic elements: sweet notes, mild spice and fresh acidic notes. They are a delicate fruit, like an apple from your grandmother\u2019s tree.\u201d The apples are hand-picked, sun-dried, then cold-pressed. \u201cWe work with a new apple orchard every season. Each batch, therefore, has a unique flavour. On the bottle, you can see the individual source and the harvest dates\u201d, Soren explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is highly unusual for a gin brand to produce their own base spirit, but such is their commitment to mastery. They do this with soft winter wheat sourced from Picardy in Northern France. Distillation is led by a master distiller they recruited in Cognac, famous for its fine brandy, using a traditional Cognac still, heated by flame. Over a 2-month timeframe, the distiller carefully reduces alcohol content (down from 96% ABV) with limestone-filtered spring water. The triple distillation process, adding in botanicals and spice, begins first with juniper, as the essential and dominant flavour, true to gin heritage. Kongsgaard then distinguishes itself from London dry gin, introducing raw cold-pressed apples, spices, coriander seeds and cinnamon on it\u2019s 2nd run. The third, final run on the press includes fresh lemon and ginger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great gins, like great whisky, can be sipped neat. Soren\u2019s top tip for gin connoisseurs is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to look for a m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inimum of 42% alcohol by volume on the bottle, as this is a tipping point on product quality: \u201cat this point, you get a much smoother drink, because of how the alcohol infuses with the other ingredients.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kongsgaard\u2019s<\/b> <b>Startup story<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kongsgaard\u2019s have built their business up from bootstrapped beginnings, self-funding for a full 5 years of, \u2018blood sweat and tears\u2019. Both founders are foodies, with backgrounds in the creative and marketing industries, and a history of running a small business before. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soren\u2019s plan has always been to create an exciting product with export potential, and made with pride: \u201cIt\u2019s not a sprint to set up this kind of business – we set up at a time where there were just a handful of gin producers in Denmark. There was lots of experimentation with mixologists. Then we got some attention from the UK, getting amazing feedback from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.craftginclub.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craft Gin Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then moving to London 2.5 years ago to take it forward. Now we are working full time, with 6 of the biggest distributors in the UK, and exporting Kongsgaard to 11 countries\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On transitioning from a brand to a company, they registered the IP in a new UK company and positioned to raise money from investors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe wanted to work with the best, but in London, you can throw a lot of money on startup legals and accountancy. You can map out the effects of dilution under different circumstances. This has been useful, as they approach a 2nd round of Angel investment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distribution-wise, the Founders\u2019 eyes are on India and China as emerging markets with high potential. Product innovation continues too, with Kongsgaard Dark Gin aged for 18 months in Limousin oak – Cognac barrels, which introduces new vanilla notes and distinctive colouration. It is an exciting new category, bridging the gap between whisky and gin. Investors are able to try a sample from their first batch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kongsgaard is now aiming to scale up production volumes, their distribution channels and their marketing spend, on the back of new investment. It is an exciting time for the company, building up momentum after a very productive year\u2019s work. They will no doubt impress investors who recognise how extraordinarily committed they are to doing things properly. Mainstream media is changing tone – when dealing with the subject directly, at least. Alongside the NHS, employers are looking for new ways to cope better with mental health, recognising the enormous impact it has on their employees, and perhaps seeing an opportunity to build more responsible brands in line with public perception. Recruiting and retaining talent is expensive, so investing in a healthy workforce is a growing trend. Recommended health resources are accessible company-wide through white-labeling the app, which focuses on 6 essential mental health pillars: good sleep, stress management, exercise, social connections, helping others, and meaningful activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alfredobelfiori\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alfredo Belfioro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that, \u201cBetterSpace seeks to transform the way people manage their mental wellbeing. We’re building the first live database of interventions that improve one\u2019s state of mind, from exercise clubs to mindfulness apps to life coaches. With a matching engine that helps you find what it’s most likely to help you, we want to make it easy for people to engage proactively in their most precious resource \u2013 their mental wellbeing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a quick example, BetterSpace might recommend a local lunchtime yoga class, or a dance class, or offer expert tips on sleep management. New books on the latest brain science are recommended, alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TED talks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on issues that matter. Recommendations are vetted, and information beautifully presented, while the impact of actions can be measured by each individual employee. This is a convenient way for companies to improve and measure welfare across a business, which encourages them to help pay for activities too. In BetterSpace\u2019s pilot project, big brand law firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linklaters.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linklaters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered \u00a3300 sponsorship for wellbeing choices; on aromatherapy, Bootcamp, or sleep therapy, for example, which can all be booked through the app. Friction is eliminated, and everyone wins. Feedback from users monitors their sense of wellbeing before and after activities like yoga, with (anonymised) BetterSpace data then made available for academics to study, and employers to learn from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend the best resources, from apps to classes to products, and make personalised suggestions via the mobile app\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/annajagric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Jagric, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director of Operations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The design is based on clinical and therapeutic research that underpins healthy wellbeing. \u201cIt helps people to improve their emotional literacy, measure wellbeing, and get access to things that you didn\u2019t know about, but probably ought to.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mental health is getting personal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jagric describes some surprising research findings; \u201cwith all that modern life throws at us, only 17% of us are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flourishing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We want to avoid burnout and stress but we lack the time and money to find what\u2019s best for us. BetterSpace exists to change that.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is used to learn what choices works for people in different circumstances, by measuring responses and adapting recommendations around the individuals themselves. This, in turn, creates valuable health insights and date at scale. \u201cThe long-term plan is to change the stigma of mental health and to give research institutions new data to help society at large.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BetterSpace\u2019s startup story involves the two founders meeting at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinc.vc\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zinc Accelerator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which brings entrepreneurs together to address large social problems and form new companies. CTO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alfredobelfiori\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alfredo Belfiori<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a biomedical engineer, and repeat tech founder, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jimwoods1972\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Woods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a background in hospitality, as former CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yo.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yo!Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tragically, 5 people close to CEO Woods have taken their own lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Founders completed a 3 month deep dive into mental health while at Zinc: recognising a society-wide lack of mental health literacy and a lack of access to information that can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 Impact Angel investors have since joined the company, funding early-stage development and startup costs, through a quick seed investment round. BetterSpace chose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seedlegals.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SeedLegals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over conventional lawyers, to create and execute the company\u2019s equity funding documents. Angels were selected based on their interest in the mission.\u201d Investor Term Sheets reflecting a focus on impact were created by the Founders on the SeedLegals platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of Jagric\u2019s role as COO is engaging investors and getting them to contribute actively.
